Credit unions are exposed to many of the same fraud typologies as banks — authorized push payment scams, account takeover, cheque fraud, mortgage fraud, business email compromise, and elder financial abuse — but with the added dimension of close member relationships that can make intervention easier or, in some cases, more delicate. This course prepares credit union staff to recognize the dominant fraud typologies, intervene appropriately with potential victims, and document the encounter to support STR filing, internal loss management, and law enforcement engagement. Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre data and FINTRAC operational alerts are used to inform the course's red flags and case studies.

You will learn how to identify the most prevalent fraud typologies in Canadian credit unions, how to recognize behavioural and transactional red flags, how to intervene with potential victims, when to delay or refuse a transaction, and how to escalate to fraud and AML teams.
