Credit unions hold extensive personal information about their members and are subject to PIPEDA or, in some provinces, substantially similar provincial private-sector privacy legislation (such as Quebec's Law 25, Alberta's PIPA, and BC's PIPA). Understanding which regime applies — and how — is fundamental. This course translates the relevant Fair Information Principles into the day-to-day reality of a credit union: member-facing interactions, contact-centre verification, marketing and analytics use of member data, third-party sharing, and incident response. Real OPC and provincial commissioner findings are used to illustrate where credit unions commonly go wrong.

You will learn how PIPEDA and provincial substantially-similar laws apply to credit union operations, how to obtain valid consent, how to handle access and correction requests, how to safeguard personal information, and how to assess and report a privacy breach.
