Banks are exposed to a wide and evolving range of fraud — from account takeover and authorized push payment scams, to cheque fraud, card-not-present fraud, mortgage fraud, business email compromise, and elder financial abuse. Front-line and back-office staff are the first line of detection and prevention. This course prepares bank staff to recognize the dominant fraud typologies they will encounter, intervene appropriately with potential victims, and document the encounter to support STR filing, internal loss management, and law enforcement engagement. Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre data, FINTRAC operational alerts, and industry loss data are used to inform the course's red flags and case studies.

You will learn how to identify the most prevalent fraud typologies in Canadian banking, how to recognize behavioural and transactional red flags, how to intervene with potential victims at the branch, contact centre, or in digital channels, when to delay or refuse a transaction, and how to escalate to fraud and AML teams.
