Banks hold some of the most sensitive personal information in Canada — from account-opening identity documents to transaction history, credit information, and beneficial ownership. PIPEDA, supplemented by OSFI guidance on technology and cyber risk, sets the floor for how that information must be collected, used, disclosed, and protected. This course translates PIPEDA's ten Fair Information Principles into the day-to-day reality of a bank: branch interactions, contact-centre verification, marketing and analytics use of customer data, third-party sharing with FinTech partners and service providers, and incident response when a privacy breach occurs. Real OPC findings involving Canadian banks are used to illustrate where banks commonly go wrong.

You will learn how PIPEDA applies to bank operations, how to obtain valid consent at onboarding and for new uses, how to handle access and correction requests, how to safeguard personal information across branch, digital, and third-party channels, and how to assess and report a privacy breach to the OPC and to affected individuals.
