Privacy and AML are sometimes seen as in tension — AML demands collection and retention of personal information that privacy law constrains. In reality, the two regimes can and must be operated together. PIPEDA, provincial substantially-similar laws, and the PCMLTFA each carve out the space for the other to operate. This course gives compliance, privacy, and data-protection professionals a working understanding of how to operate privacy and AML together — including consent at onboarding, retention scheduling, secure storage of KYC records, third-party sharing, and breach response. It addresses both PIPEDA-only environments and those subject to Quebec's Law 25, Alberta's PIPA, and BC's PIPA.

You will learn how PIPEDA and provincial substantially-similar laws interact with the PCMLTFA, how to obtain valid consent at onboarding, how to schedule retention of KYC records, how to secure personal information, how to manage third-party sharing, and how to respond to a privacy breach involving AML data.
