Lawyers in Canada are not reporting entities under the PCMLTFA (following the Supreme Court of Canada's decision in Federation of Law Societies v. Canada), but they are subject to comprehensive AML rules under the Federation of Law Societies' Model Rules and the rules of each provincial law society. These cover client identification and verification, no-cash and trust account rules, and ongoing monitoring. This training equips lawyers, articling students, paralegals, and law firm administrators with the AML obligations of the legal profession in Canada, the ML typologies most likely to arise in legal practice, and how to satisfy law society obligations without compromising solicitor-client privilege. It addresses both transactional practice (real estate, corporate, tax) and litigation practice where trust funds may be received.

You will learn the AML obligations of the legal profession under the Federation of Law Societies' Model Rules and provincial rules, including client identification and verification, the no-cash rule, the trust account rule, and ongoing monitoring. You will learn how to recognize ML/TF red flags in legal practice and how to handle them while protecting solicitor-client privilege.
