LIVE TRAINING
Fraud, Friction & FINTRAC
Fraud has reached epidemic levels in Canada and beyond. This session looks at what changed to get us here: technology, faster payments, impersonation, social isolation and organized crime’s post-pandemic evolution. It covers financial crime basics and debunks common myths, such as “proceeds of crime = cash” and “following the law is enough.” It explains why frictionless transactions can benefit criminals, using an Operation Shamrock case study.
Why has fraud become so common, and what can your organization do about it? Dr. Amber D. Scott, Co-Founder of The Compliance Professor, explains how financial crime has evolved and debunks common myths. She shows why a little friction can protect clients from scams, and covers FINTRAC obligations for regulated entities, including suspicious transaction reporting, assessments and what banks ask for. Participants will leave knowing why meeting legal requirements isn’t enough, and how compliance, fraud and AML teams can work together to stop scams. The training closes with practical steps for using friction to derail scams and working more closely with your Compliance Officer.
